From the McCain '08 Newsroom

ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today announced that former Virginia Governor, Jim Gilmore, has endorsed John McCain for president.

"There is one issue that is more pressing than all others -- winning the war against radical Islamic extremism," said Governor Gilmore. "And there is one man who is best prepared to step-in and serve as commander in chief from day one John McCain. I have known John McCain for years. He is a proven conservative leader with a track record of cutting taxes, eliminating wasteful government spending, upholding our traditional values, and promoting a strong national defense. I urge my fellow Virginians to join me in voting for and supporting John McCain this Tuesday."

RTD: McCain: Democrats Misunderstand War
By Bill Geroux, Richmond Times-Dispatch

NORFOLK -- Sen. John McCain, newly confident of being the GOP's presidential nominee, used the home of the world's largest Navy base yesterday to state his qualifications for becoming commander-in-chief.

The visit, four days before Virginia's presidential primary, came as McCain announced a campaign rally for 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Virginia Aviation Museum at Richmond International Airport.

Also yesterday, McCain picked up endorsements from Attorney General Bob McDonnell, who previously backed former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, and from Rep. Eric I. Cantor, R-7th.

In Norfolk, McCain said the surge in Iraq is working and that he will listen mainly to Gen. David Petraeus, the military commander in Iraq, about what troop levels are needed. McCain said it would be a mistake to set a timetable for U.S. withdrawal, as Democrats suggest.

McCain recalled that his first duty station in the Navy was nearby at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach. He joked about having led the good life of a young jet pilot at the beach.
